Summer Heat & Your Pup: What Every Dog Parent Needs to Know
Summer in Cayman is no joke and while we love the sunshine, it’s important to remember that our furry friends feel the heat even more than we do. Imagine walking around in a fur coat under a blazing sun. Yeah… not ideal.
Here’s what to keep in mind before heading out for a walk:
1. Paws on Pavement Test
If you can’t comfortably place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your pup’s paws. Stick to grassy areas or head out earlier in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is gentler.
2. Hydration is Everything
Bring water for both you and your dog. Dehydration can creep in fast, and dogs can’t exactly ask for a drink but panting, excessive drooling, or slowing down are major red flags.
3. Watch for Overheating Signs
If your pup seems unusually tired, starts vomiting, or stumbles, that’s a potential emergency. Get them to shade or AC immediately and call your vet.
4. Less is More in the Heat
Walks don’t have to be marathons. In the summer, short, mentally stimulating walks are sometimes more beneficial than long treks. Think sniff trails, slow-paced enrichment, and brain games along the way.
At Green Paw, we prioritize safe, eco-friendly enrichment and that includes respecting the rhythm of the seasons. During the hotter months, we tailor our Aqua Paw and Adventure Paw sessions to keep pets engaged and protected.
So yes, get outside. Enjoy the light. But let’s keep it cool for their paws, their peace, and their well-being.
How to Know When Your Dog Needs Enrichment!
Just like humans, dogs can get bored, anxious, or even down when they don’t get enough stimulation. If your pup is chewing on things, pacing, barking excessively, or just seems “off,” they might be craving more than just a walk.
Enrichment isn’t just about exercise it’s about engaging your dog’s mind and body. Puzzle toys, nature walks, scent games, and social interaction can help bring out their best self.
At Green Paw, we believe every pup deserves purposeful play. Our Adventure Paw and Mindful Play sessions are designed to refresh, refocus, and reignite the joy in your dog’s daily life.
Eco-Friendly Pet Parenting: Small Changes, Big Impact
Going green doesn’t stop with us our pets can help too! Making a few small swaps in your routine can reduce waste and protect our beautiful island.
Try these:
Use biodegradable poop bags. Choose natural grooming products. Switch to reusable treat containers or eco toys. Support services (like us!) that care for pets and the planet.
At Green Paw, we’re proud to walk gently offering services that are good for your furry friends and kind to the Earth. Because every pawprint matters.
